Afternoon Tea at the Capital Hotel in Knightsbridge

I finally scheduled some me time in my calendar and booked an Afternoon Tea. Instead of booking through a hotel of my choice. I decided to book through Bookatable by Michelin, I had heard of them before but never had the I incentive to book a spot in advance. I’m usually the last minute kinda girl. Anyways what did convince me were the free-flowing Cocktails, not gonna lie, I love cocktails. Interesting enough they only offer those if you book through Book a Table. It definitely was a win-win and saved me quite a bit of money. The Hotel I chose was The Capital in Knightsbridge, it’s just around the corner from Harrods and super easy to find. It’s a smallish 5star hotel and according to their website the very first boutique hotel that opened in London back in ’71. When I walked in I said my name at the reception and who knew they were already waiting for me. A very sweet lady lead me into this small and cosy room, where my table was set up already in front of the window. I really loved the interior design of the room, it had a homely atmosphere, which I thought perfectly resonated with that of a Tea Room. I, of course, don’t know if that is the only purpose of it, but sure looked like it.

Anyways moving along, when I sat down I immediately got the menu for the afternoon tea treats as well as the one for the teas. They did have quite a large selection of teas, but I usually go for the black tea’s and so I chose the Jing Assam, great flavour and lovely with or without milk. I also ordered one of the free-flowing cocktails right away. I could choose between 2 options one was a Peach Bellini and the other a cosmopolitan. I went with the Peach Bellini first, it was delicious and I really enjoyed the light peach flavour. The lady that was serving me, let me know that I didn’t have to decide anything from the treats menu as I would get all the courses. The first course consisted of 3 sandwiches, the first one was Cucumber on Matcha Tea Bread, which I thought was such a clever Idea and it also looked pretty cool. The second Sandwich was, smoked salmon with cream cheese on beetroot bread. I think you get the idea the bread was colour coordinated with the toppings. Last but not least was the egg mayonnaise on brown bread. They were all tasty, but I really liked the matcha green tea twist, very creative idea.

Also almost forgot to mention it, the first course came with a Cornish scone, which to my surprise, was a bit spicy. I always expect scones to be somewhat sweet, so that was an unexpected surprise. By the end of the first course, I was already finished with my first cocktail and ordered the second available choice the cosmopolitan. Slightly stronger then there Bellini, but I have to say I actually preferred that one. On to my favourite part of the meal the ‘Sweat Delights’, they were served on a plate stand that had 3 levels. This part always reminds me of Alice in Wonderland. Funny enough the top plate featured a raspberry macaroon that looked like a pocket watch, very cute I might add. A cute and tiny walnut & coffee cake, elderflower jelly that was served in a shot glass as well as a Cassis Cheesecake. You might think the portions were tiny, but by the end, I was so full, I could hardly move. I had finished my first Afternoon Tea and chose to try their house blend breakfast tea ‘Jing Capital Hotel Blend’. I guess as most breakfast tea’s it was a bit strong and I preferred with milk. On to the second plate, which had a selection of fruit and plain scones.

By the time I had ordered another cosmo, I do have to say that although I had 2 hours to order as many cocktails as I wished, I only managed 3 which was more than enough for me. The serving staff was very attentive and you could always call them if you wanted to have anything more. So let’s move on to the scones, they were served with Cornish clotted cream and strawberry jam. I loved the cream and it just melted in my mouth and the fruity scone was a perfect combination with the cream. I did also try the strawberry jam but have to admit jam isn’t my favourite. Also tried one of the scones on its own and really liked it as well. All of those scones were slightly sweet. The last plate was holding. the strawberry jam and the cream. The last Tea I tried was a Jasmine Tea called ‘Jasmine Pearls’ and it was heavenly. I think next time I will try a few different varieties of teas, so a black tea, a green one and perhaps a fruity one. Just so I can try different flavours. I finished slightly before the 2 hours were over, but as I had mentioned earlier I couldn’t have eaten or drank anything else at this point and went full and happy home.
